KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Omaha hockey team earned a spot in the championship game of the Icebreaker with a 5-1 win over Army on Friday night at the Sprint Center.
Zahn Raubenheimer paced the Mavericks' attack with a goal and two assists.
UNO will take on Notre Dame on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. looking for its second Icebreaker title. The Mavs won the same tournament back in 2009.
The Mavericks opened the scoring on an early power play.
Brock Montpetit carried the puck into the Army zone down the right wing and dropped a pass to Raubenheimer who ripped a shot past goalie Ryan Leets at 4:31.
UNO doubled its lead off a netmouth scramble. Defenseman Nick Seeler crashed the net and knocked in his first collegiate goal to put the Mavs up 2-0 after one.
In the second,
Bryce Aneloski made it 3-0 when he got loose in the slot and fired a low wrist shot inside the post.
Johnnie Searfoss picked up his first goal of the season off a pass from
Brent Gwidt. He cut down the right wing, slipped to the net and stuffed in the rebound of his own shot to give UNO a 4-0 lead.
Army got on the board just 1:25 later when Brian Schultz's shot from the point was deflected by
John Faulkner to make it 4-1 after two.
Matt White closed the scoring in the third period, slipping a backhander past Leets at 14:48.
Aneloski, Seeler and Searfoss all finished the game with a goal and an assist.
The win was the third straight for the Mavericks against Army and also was the 250th win in school history.
