MANKATO, Minn. –
Bryce Aneloski scored a powerplay goal in overtime to give the UNO Mavericks a 2-1 win over Minnesota State on Friday night at the Verizon Wireless Center.
The win was tempered by an injury to freshman goaltender
Ryan Massa. In the first minute of overtime, MSU defenseman Evan Mosey crashed into Massa, knocking him back into his net. Massa had to be taken off the ice on a stretcher.
Just after play resumed, Minnesota State's Adam Mueller was given a slashing penalty during a scrum in front of backup goalie
Dayn Belfour. On the ensuing power play, Matt White set up Aneloski who walked down the slot and beat goalie Phil Cook with a wrist shot through traffic. It was his second goal of the year.
Minnesota State had forced overtime on a power play in the third period. Jean-Paul Lafontaine pounced on the rebound of a shot by Matt Leitner, lifting in his team-leading 12th goal of the year.
UNO took the lead early in the first period.
Matt Smith sprung
Ryan Walters and White on a 2-on-1. Walters slipped the puck to a wide open White who fired home his 12th goal of the year over sprawling Cook.
Massa made 39 saves, but Belfour got credit for the win with one save. Cook made 35 saves in the loss.
UNO is now 12-9-4 overall and 9-5-3 in the WCHA. Minnesota State dips to 7-17-1 and 3-13-1 in the league. The two teams will play again on Saturday night at 7:07 p.m.
