Mavericks End Streak for Top 'Dogs, 3-1

Box Score Box Score

OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO Mavericks ended No. 1 Minnesota Duluth's 17-game unbeaten streak, beating the defending national champions 3-1 on Saturday night at a raucous CenturyLink Center.

The win gave the Mavericks a split of the weekend series against the nation's top team.  They are now 11-9-4 overall and 8-5-3 in the WCHA.  The Bulldogs suffered their first road loss of the season and their first loss overall since Oct. 15.  They are now 15-4-3 overall and 11-3-2 in the WCHA.

It was the first win for the Mavericks against a top-ranked team since they beat Miami 4-2 on Feb. 20, 2010.

The game-winning goal came on a heads up play by UNO freshman Andrew Schmit.  He took a pass from Brent Gwidt and whipped the puck on goal.  The shot surprised UMD goalie Kenny Reiter, and the puck broke through his pads for Schmit's first collegiate goal.

Josh Archibald scored into an empty net with a little over a minute remaining to ice the game.  The Mavericks were outshot 44-15 for the game but rode the sparkling goaltending of freshman Ryan Massa who made 43 saves for his fifth win of the year.

The Mavericks weathered an early storm and took the lead on a power play late in the first period.  Bryce Aneloski fired a shot from the top of the slot that was tipped in by Brock Montpetit for his second goal of the weekend and fifth of the year.

The Bulldogs tied the game just 1:32 into the second period when Jack Connolly took advantage of a scramble in front of the UNO net to score his 13th goal of the year.  The goal stretched his point streak to a remarkable 20 games.

With the split, UNO now has not been swept at home since February of 2009 when they dropped two games at the Civic Auditorium to Notre Dame.  UNO has not been swept in a series at the CenturyLink Center since Jan. 11 and 12, 2008 against Miami.
