OMAHA, Neb. – The No. 1 Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs snapped a 2-2 tie with four goals in the third period to beat the Mavericks, 6-2, on Friday night. The game was played in front of a school record crowd of 16,138 at the CenturyLink Center.
The Mavericks are now 10-9-4 overall and 7-5-3 in the WCHA while the Bulldogs improved to 15-3-3 overall and 11-2-2 in league play. They now are unbeaten in a school-record 17 games.
The two teams conclude the series on Saturday night at 7:07 p.m. The game will be shown live statewide on NET-1 and NET-HD.
The third started well for UNO when
John Faulkner stopped a penalty shot attempt by Mike Seidel just 1:04 into the period.
But just 1:41 later, Travis Oleksuk won a faceoff and J.T. Brown fired a top corner shot to put UMD up 3-2.
Brown, who had scored the game's first goal just 1:23 into the first period, finished the hat trick by banging home a crossing pass from Oleksuk to make it 4-2 just 28 seconds later.
Dean Blais pulled Faulkner for the extra attacker with more than five minute remaining, but Seidel scored on a shot from the red line to make it 5-2. Joe Basaraba finished the scoring at 18:22.
The Bulldogs had a 2-0 lead after the first on goals by Brown and Dan DeLisle just 58 seconds apart.
UNO got on the board just 22 seconds into the second period.
Brock Montpetit took a pass from Matt White, cut across the slot and backhanded a shot past UMD's Kenny Reiter to make it 2-1.
The Mavericks then tied the game when White and
Terry Broadhurst worked a give and go through the neutral zone. Broadhurst's shot got stopped, but White crashed the net and knocked in the rebound for his 11th goal of the year.
Faulkner stopped 34 shots in the loss while Reiter earned his 15th win with 22 saves.
The previous school attendance record was 15,137 set last season against Wisconsin.
