GREEN BAY, Wis. - The UNO women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 defeat in its season opener at Green Bay on Friday night. The Phoenix scored once in each half to steal the shutout win over the Mavericks in UNO's inaugural Division I game.
Hekla Palmadottir scored both goals to lift Green Bay (1-0). She broke the scoreless deadlock in the 26th minute when Emily Friedl broke free down the left side of the field and centered a pass to Palmadottir, who finished from close range.
Palmadottir tacked on a second goal in the 82nd minute on a shot from the top of the box. Hannah Kernen earned the assist.
The Mavs (0-1) put five shots on goal but failed to get anything by Phoenix keeper Maddie Drusch. UNO goalie
Katelyn Tschida made five saves in the loss. Green Bay, the Horizon League's top defensive team last season, outshot UNO 23-8 overall and 7-5 in shots on goal.
The Mavs travel to South Dakota on Aug. 28 for a 1 p.m., game against the Coyotes.
