NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Matt White and
Ryan Walters each scored two goals to lead the UNO Mavericks to a 6-2 win over Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday afternoon at Bridgestone Arena.
The Mavericks earned a split of the weekend series played at the home of the NHL's Nashville Predators. UNO is now 8-7-3 overall while the Chargers dip to 1-15-1.
The Mavericks wasted no time grabbing the lead. Just 42 seconds into the game,
Brent Gwidt took a drop pass from
Jayson Megna and snapped a wrist shot past UAH goalie Clarke Saunders for his third goal of the year.
At 2:19 of the period, White made it 2-0. He got spun out by a Chargers' defenseman but still whipped a backhand shot that beat Saunders through the five hole.
The Mavericks stretched their lead early in the second period when Walters swept in the rebound of a shot by
Brock Montpetit for his fourth goal of the year.
White picked up his second goal of the game on a power play halfway through the second. He got free at the top of the face off circles and zipped a wrist shot past Saunders for his eighth goal of the year.
The Chargers fought back late in the second, getting goals from Kyle Lysaght and Tyler Kotlarz to close the gap to 4-2 after two.
Alex Hudson restored the three-goal lead when he tapped in a pass from
Terry Broadhurst during a power play at 2:28 of the third.
Walters added his second when he scored off a wraparound at 16:06.
Ryan Massa stopped 24 shots to improve to 3-2-1 on the year while Saunders made 36 saves in the loss.
The Mavericks play their last series before Christmas when they travel to North Dakota for games on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 9 and 10.
