GRAND FORKS, N.D. – North Dakota broke a scoreless tie early in the third period and hung on to beat the UNO Mavericks, 1-0, on Saturday night at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
UNO heads into the Christmas break with a record of 9-8-3 overall and 7-4-3 in the WCHA, good for third place. The Sioux are now 9-8-1 overall and 7-7-0 in the league.
On the winning goal, Danny Kristo scooped up a loose puck behind the UNO net, curled out to the left wing and beat goalie
Ryan Massa with a wrist shot to the top corner.
The Mavericks pressed for the equalizer late and nearly tied the game, but
Brock Montpetit's shot from the top of the circles hit the post and ricocheted out.
Massa finished the game with 31 saves while Aaron Dell earned the shutout at the other end with 26 saves.
The Mavericks will now enjoy two weeks off, their first break of the season, before returning to action on Friday, Dec. 30 when they open a two-game series with Quinnipiac at the CenturyLink Center
