OMAHA, Neb. – Colorado College scored three powerplay goals including the game-winner in the third period to beat the UNO Mavericks, 5-2, on Saturday night at the CenturyLInk Center.
The win allowed the Tigers to earn a split of the two-game series. The Mavericks are now 5-5-0 on the season and 4-2-0 in the WCHA. The second-ranked Tigers improve to 5-1-0 and 3-1-0 in league play.
Omaha native Nick Dineen finished the game with a goal and three assists to lead the Tigers attack.
Trailing 2-1 in the third period and killing a penalty,
Ryan Walters put the pressure on goalie Josh Thorimbert, stealing the puck and tucking it into an empty net to tie the game.
But on an ensuing power play, Jaden Schwartz swatted home a bouncing puck for the eventual game winner. His brother, Rylan, and former Omaha Lancer Dakota Eveland scored into an empty net as the Mavericks pulled
Ryan Massa looking to mount a comeback.
After a scoreless first period, Colorado College seized the lead with a pair of powerplay goals. Defenseman Gabe Guentzel, son of former UNO assistant coach Mike Guentzel beat Massa with a deflected point shot off a face off. Just 1:05 later, Dineen tipped a shot that banked off the post to make it 2-0.
The Mavericks hammered away in the second with six power plays of their own, but they got their lone goal of the period while playing four-on-four.
Josh Archibald won a face-off back to
Andrej Sustr who fired a shot from the right point that squeezed between Thorimbert and the near post. It was Sustr's third goal of the season, a new career high.
The Mavericks are back on the road next weekend to play Bemidji State on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 11 and 12.
