DENVER, Colo. – The No. 19 UNO Mavericks battled to a 3-3 tie against the 11th-ranked Denver Pioneers on Saturday night at Magness Arena.
UNO is now 6-6-2 overall and 5-3-2 in the WCHA. Denver is 5-3-3 overall and 4-2-3 in league play.
The Mavericks wasted no time getting on the board.
Jayson Megna stole a bouncing puck from the Denver defenseman, slipped in and threw a backhander by goalie Adam Murray at 2:01.
Jayson Megna figured into the second goal which came just 3:24 later. He curled out from behind the Denver net and found
Josh Archibald who rammed home his seventh goal of the year. That total leads all UNO freshman.
Mike Young made it 3-0 on a fluke play in the final minute. Murray had been knocked out of the game during a collision in front of the Denver net. Young tested his relief, Juho Olkinuora, with a slap shot from the red line that slipped under Olkinuora's pad for a powerplay goal that made it 3-0 after one.
Denver got one goal back at 1:38 of the second period when Shawn Ostrow whirled through the slot and tucked the puck past the outstretched leg of
Dayn Belfour who was making his first collegiate start in the UNO goal.
The Pioneers closed to within a goal later in the second when Drew Shore fed Jason Zucker for a breakaway. He fired a shot over Belfour's shoulder to make it 3-2.
Beau Bennett tied the game for Denver on a power play early in the third. He stepped down the right wing and wristed a hard shot over the shoulder of Belfour for his third goal of the season.
The best chance in overtime came with just .5 seconds remaining when
Brent Gwidt was stopped on the doorstep.
The Mavericks return home to host St. Cloud State on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 26 and 27.
