MADISON, Wis. – Alex Hudson scored with 20.8 seconds remaining in regulation to help the UNO Mavericks beat the Wisconsin Badgers, 5-4, on Friday night at the Kohl Center.
UNO overcame a three-goal deficit to earn the win and improve to 4-3-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the WCHA. It was the Mavs' first ever win over the Badgers in Madison and their third straight in the all-time series. Wisconsin is now 3-4-0 overall and 2-3-0 in the WCHA.
The two teams finish the series on Saturday night at 7:07 p.m.
The Mavericks scored four powerplay goals in the game with Hudson's as the capper. Stationed in the low slot, he took a feed from
Terry Broadhurst and fired home his first goal of the season. Hudson also had two assists in the game.
The third period of the game was one of wild swings. The Mavericks entered the period trailing 3-2 but tied the game just 2:41 in when Matt White got loose down the right wing, deked around the Wisconsin defenseman and backhanded a shot past goalie Landon Peterson.
Just 21 seconds later,
Andrej Sustr was whistled for a hooking penalty, and the Badgers cashed in when Tyler Barnes fired home a pass from Mark Zengerle for his second goal of the game.
But the Mavericks used their own power play to tie it just 1:44 after Wisconsin's go-ahead goal. With the Badgers a man short for their second too many men on the ice penalty of the night, Hudson spotted Broadhurst alone at the side of the next. Broadhurst zipped in his second of the game and team-leading sixth of the year to make it 4-4.
The game got off to a rocky start for the Mavericks who trailed 3-0 just 5:45 into the game. Wisconsin scored on its first shot of the game when Derek Lee wired a shot past UNO's
Ryan Massa from just inside the blue line. The goal came 46 seconds into the game.
The Badgers made it 2-0 when Zengerle spun out of the left wing corner and put the puck on the stick of a charging Barnes who tapped in his fourth goal of the year.
UNO got into penalty trouble right after the goal when
Zahn Raubenheimer was given a five-minute checking from behind penalty and a game misconduct. In the ensuing melee, the Mavericks picked up another minor, putting them down five-on-three.
The Badgers cashed in when Zengerle fed Michael Mersch for the goal that made it 3-0.
But the Mavericks battled back, closing the gap to 3-1 when
Brent Gwidt scored on the power play at 14:58 of the first.
UNO got to within 3-2 at 15:08 of the second when Broadhurst got his first of the game on yet another power play. He finished the night with two goals and two assists.
Massa made 18 saves to earn his first collegiate win in goal.
The Mavericks had four powerplay goals in the game. It was their first win of the season when trailing after two periods.
