OMAHA, Neb. – Sebastien Geoffrion scored 29 seconds into overtime as Alabama-Huntsville stunned the UNO Mavericks 2-1 on Saturday night at the Qwest Center. Freshman goaltender Clarke Saunders was an even bigger hero for the Chargers, making 58 saves to hold the Mavericks at bay until the winner.
The loss drops the Mavericks to 14-10-2 overall while Alabama-Huntsville, an independent, improves to 4-24-2. It was their first win in 10 games against UNO.
On the winning goal, Neil Ruffini threw a weak shot on net that took an odd bounce off the stick of goalie #John Faulkner#. Geoffrion pounced on the rebound, popping a shot over a sprawled Faulkner.
The game was scoreless through two periods as UAH goalie Saunders stopped a variety of UNO shots to keep his team even. He had 37 saves after 40 minutes while Faulkner had to make just 13 at the other end.
UNO had to battle back in the third to tie the game after UAH's Mac Roy came out of the penalty box, took a pass from Justin Cseter and roared in on a breakaway. He beat Faulkner with a hard shot just 58 seconds into the period.
The Mavericks tied the game at 10:17. #Brock Montpetit broke down the right wing and fired a shot that bounced off Saunders and right to a charging Ryan Walters# who knocked home his eighth goal of the year.
The Mavs outshot the Chargers 59-19 for the game. Faulkner finished with 16 saves.
The Mavericks return to the ice of the Qwest Center next weekend when they host St. Cloud State on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 4 and 5.
