OMAHA, Neb. - #Beth Haley# took a perfect game into the seventh inning Tuesday in game one against Northwest Missouri and then walked and hit a batter before closing out a no-hitter, the second of the year for the Mavs. UNO (29-9, 9-2 MIAA) won the opener, 2-0 and then took the second game, 5-3.
Haley didn't allow a batted ball to leave the infield as she improved to 12-2. She struck out four and 13 of the 21 outs were groundouts. She also caught three batted balls, including two liners back to her. With a full count and two outs in the seventh, Haley walked Erin Leslie, giving up a chance at perfection. She then hit the next batter before getting the final Bearcat batter to foul out to first baseman #Kristin Wellwood#.
The Mavericks backed her gem up with two runs in the fourth. #Lindsey Slocum led off the inning with a double and then she and Lindsay Redding scored on a single up the middle from Alli Hukill#.
#Julia Krejci# went 2 for 2 with a walk and Slocum also had two hits. The Mavs managed seven off NWMSU pitcher Jenna Creger.
The Bearcats knocked down any ideas of a doubleheader no-no when Nicole Povero led off game two with a single. Slocum, who pitched UNO's other no-hitter this year, a perfect game on March 28 against Missouri Southern, then allowed Povero to score off a double from Dacey Hassey to left centerfield.
The Mavs took the lead in the second, scoring three runs off just one hit. Krejci led off by reaching on an error. #Katelyn Hinton then pinch ran for her and beat out a throw at second on Emma Wright#'s sacrifice bunt attempt. Redding then walked to load the bases and #Treightin Yates hit a two-run single. Molly Feichtinger#'s sacrifice fly then drove in Redding.
The Bearcats got one more in the top of the third before the Mavs made the score 5-2 with two in the bottom of the third. Krejci drove in Slocum with a double and then later scored on an error.
Northwest scored one more on a home run in the fifth, the only of the day after the strong wind pushed everything in from left field.
The Bearcats mounted a two-out threat in the seventh and Haley had to come back out and close the game. She struck out the final batter with the bases loaded to pick up her second save.
Both teams had eight hits in the game. Redding, who was just 1 for 2 at the plate entering the game, went 2 for 2 with a walk and run scored. Yates also had two hits.
Slocum ended up giving up all eight hits while striking out nine and walking one. She earned the win to improve to 11-2.
The Mavericks will take a break from official MIAA games and play five non-conference contests this weekend at the MIAA Northern Crossover, hosted by NWMSU. They begin action Friday at 4 p.m. against Emporia State.
