Mavericks Sweep MIAA Openers; Saturday Games Pushe

OMAHA, Neb. - #Kristi Meneely# went 5 for 7 with four RBI as the Mavericks swept Pittsburg State Friday afternoon in their first home and MIAA games of the year at Claussen-Westgate Field. Nebraska-Omaha (16-7, 2-0 MIAA won the opener, 4-1 and then took the final game, 7-2.

Maverick head coach #Jeanne Scarpello# earned the 458th win of her career with the sweep, putting her one win away from the UNO career winning record. She can tie the record and then set a new one on Sunday when the Mavericks host Missouri Southern in a 2 p.m. doubleheader. The games were to be played Saturday, but expected rain that day pushed them back.

With the Mavericks up 1-0 in the first game, #Kristin Wellwood singled in the sixth innning and Lindsey Slocum walked. Meneely then hit a double to left-center to drive them in and she later scored on a single from Emma Wright#. Those runs proved to be the difference as the Gorillas scored on in the top of the seventh.

#Beth Haley# improved to 5-1 with the win in the circle. She went the distance and allowed three hits and an earned run with three strikeouts.

Meneely got the Mavs on the board in the fourth inning with an RBI single and she went 3 for 3 in that game with three runs batted in.

The Mavericks scored two early runs in the second game and then piled on plenty of insurance late in the contest.

Slocum and #Julia Krejci had RBI singles in the opening frame. Treightin Yates# was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in one more in the fourth.

PSU got a run in the top of the fifth to cut UNO's lead to 3-2, but the Mavs scored two each in the fifth and sixth to hold off the Gorillas.

Slocum and Meneely drove in runs with singles in the fifth and then a double from #Chelse Koca# and a single from Wellwood drove in the final runs in the sixth.

Slocum pitched the complete game and improved to 6-1. She allowed eight hits but just two earned runs. She struck out four with a walk.
