OMAHA, Neb. – The #6 Bemidji State Beavers beat the #19 UNO hockey team 3-1 on Friday night at Qwest Center Omaha. The Beavers scored two second period goals and held on against a frantic UNO counterattack in the third.
The game was the first between the two teams in seven years and a battle of schools who will enter the Western Collegiate Hockey Association next season. They'll meet again on Saturday night for a special 8:05 p.m. face off.
The Beavers broke a scoreless deadlock 2:40 into the second period. Jordan George broke down the left wing and threw the puck to Matt Read who tapped in his team-leading 17th goal of the year.
Bemidji State doubled its lead on the power play. Jamie McQueen wristed in a shot off the left post past UNO goalie Jeremie Dupont to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead after two.
