OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO hockey team finished off a sweep of its first ever WCHA home series, beating Minnesota State, 5-2, on Saturday night at Qwest Center Omaha. #Terry Broadhurst# had three assists as UNO improved to 7-1-0 on the season.
The Mavericks are also 4-0-0 in the WCHA, the league's only unbeaten team in league play. Minnesota State falls to 2-4-4 and 2-4-2 in the WCHA.
UNO broke the ice at 9:46 of the first period when Broadhurst set up Andrej Sustr for a wrist shot from the slot that found the top shelf. It was Sustr's first collegiate goal.
Minnesota State tied the game late in the period when Kurt Davis fired a wrist shot past #John Faulkner# on a powerplay.
The Mavs retook the lead just 2:27 later when Ryan Walters forced a turnover and slipped a pass around a sliding defender to Zahn Raubenheimer who knocked in his third goal of the year.
UNO pushed its lead to two goals halfway through the second when Matt White hit #Rich Purslow# with a blind backhand pass. Purslow fired home his fourth goal of the year to make it 3-1.
But Minnesota State kept it close with another powerplay goal. Eriah Hayes tipped in a shot from Andrew Sackrison to close the gap to 3-2 at the second intermission.
UNO put the game out of reach when Broadhurst set up Johnnie Searfoss for a one-time shot that scorched past goalie Phil Cook at 12:03.
#Matt Ambroz# scored into an empty net in the late going for his team-leading sixth goal of the year.
Faulkner stopped 26 shots to improve to 7-1-0 on the season while Cook took the loss with 34 saves.
It's UNO's first sweep of Minnesota State since the 2007-08 season.
UNO is on the road next week, visiting #20 St. Cloud State on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 12 and 13. Face off is 7:07 p.m. each night.
