OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO women's tennis team took part in four separate events as part its fall schedule, a schedule that included one head-to-head match and three opens.
The Mavericks opened their season on Sept. 3, in Omaha, at the Robert Baird Open. UNO had the only college players in the event as all others were either high school or adult open players. The Mavs fared best in the doubles. #Heather Hottman and Jessica Hottman# defeated Heather Blumel and Lee Cooney, 6-2, 6-0, and #Traci Moklestad and Samantha Thomas# edged Frauke Hachtmann and Michelle Liseo-Talarico, 4-6, 7-6, 6-3.
The Mavs faced Division I competition at Drake on Sept. 10-12. Sophomore #Amanda Henkel# had a good showing in the Flight C consolation matches. She won a marathon match with Megan Sween of North Dakota. After falling 1-6 in the first set, Henkel rallied to win the second set, 6-4 and then outlasted Sween in the third, 10-7.
In doubles, the team of Heather Hottman and #Kelsie Olson# won its first match, beating Chelsey Galipeau and Mindy Lawrence of North Dakota, 8-3. They played well in the next round against Northern Iowa's Jessica Kunzelmann and Krissy Lankelma before falling, 8-4.
The Mavericks returned home to host Concordia University on Sept. 21, winning 9-0. Olson and freshman Jessica Hottman defeated Concordia's seniors Taylor Cook and Faith Ahlman, 8-5, to win first doubles. In second doubles play, juniors #Caitlin Christy# and Moklestad defeated Concordia's Kim Francis and Sarah Ebert, 8-3. Moklestad also won number one singles after defeating Cook, 6-1, 6-4. Thomas defeated Concordia's Francis, 6-1, 6-2, in number two singles while Olson stopped Colleen Freudenberg, 6-1, 6-0 in number three singles.
The Mavericks attended the Omaha Collegiate Championship hosted by Creighton University on Oct. 2. Thomas defeated Ysabel Nunez of the University of South Dakota who retired because of injury in Flight B singles, finishing seventh overall. Olson beat Maddy Warder of South Dakota, 6-1, 6-1, to finish seventh in Flight C singles, and #Diana Dobey# defeated Ashley Oyakawa of Colorado University in Flight E singles, 7-5, 6-3, to finish third overall.
In Flight A doubles play, Moklestad and Thomas fell to South Dakota's Veronika Makoshov and Alena Sergeychik, 8-2. In Flight B doubles play, Olson and Hottman lost to North Dakota's Megan Sween and Chelsey Galipeau, 8-3.
The Mavericks begin the spring half of their season on Feb. 4 when they host Nebraska Wesleyan at Hanscom Park Tennis Center.
