OMAHA, Neb. - Omaha Women's Tennis fell to No. 65 Denver in the regular-season finale.
The Mavericks (15-9, 5-1) secured the No. 2 seed for the Summit League tournament while Denver (14-7, 6-0) secured its 12th straight regular-season title and the No. 1 seed.
In the series history, Omaha has never won more than one point against the Pioneers or won the doubles point until today.
The Mavs started the match with a doubles win to secure the first point. The dynamic duo of sophomores Nina Wiese (Flushing, N.Y.) and Katelynn Kock (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) secured the program record for single-season doubles wins with their 20th doubles win of the season. The pair defeated Denver's Marley Lambert and Yunfei Cai 6-3 to move to 20-3 this spring.
In the No. 3 match, junior Khayli Buckels (Ballwin, Mon.) and senior Summer Shannon (Plano, Texas) closed out the match with a 6-4 win over Natalie Cinkova and Zoe Adkins.
Kock went on to win her singles match in the No. 3 flight with a pair of 6-3 sets over Cinkova.
"Proud of the effort today," head coach Adam Summitt said. "We knew it would be an uphill battle. The team really had some belief today. It showed with their scores and effort. We played some of our best doubles of the season. We had a big dip in singles and that is common after a great doubles match and point. Though we got behind on some courts and just couldn't dig out. I felt we had a few paths to victory, but Denver played great and really took the matches when they needed it. Now we just have to prepare for the conference tournament.
The Summit League tournament will start on Friday, April 24 with the semifinal round in Tulsa, Okla. (2) Omaha will face (3) North Dakota at 12 p.m. CT. The winner will advance to the final at 10 a.m. CT on Sunday, April 25.
