Box Score

OMAHA, Neb. – The #7/8 North Dakota Fighting Sioux used a three-goal third period to beat the #4 UNO hockey team, 6-5 on Friday night at Qwest Center Omaha.  It was the first home loss of the season for the Mavericks.

The Mavericks fall to 8-2-1 on the year and suffer their first loss in the WCHA, dipping to 5-1-1.  The Fighting Sioux are now 8-4-1 and 7-2-0 in league play.  The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at 7:07 p.m.

The game was played in front of 11,181, the second-largest crowd in UNO history.

Trailing 4-3 entering the third, the Fighting Sioux tied the game when Matt Frattin scored through a screen for his second goal of the game.

Chay Genoway gave the Sioux the lead when he walked down the left wing, curled behind the net and beat goalie #John Faulkner# with a wraparound shot at 13:52.

Just 34 seconds later, Danny Kristo scored off a pass from Brad Malone, who had three assists, to make it 6-4.

#Alex Hudson# narrowed the gap with a goal at 16:56 past back-up goalie Aaron Dell, but the Mavs could get no closer.

The Mavericks struck just 2:37 into the game.  #Joey Martin# dumped the puck into the zone, but Genoway couldn't control it.  #Rich Purslow# zoomed in and knocked the loose puck over goalie Brad Eidsness for his fifth goal of the year.

UNO stretched its lead later when a dump in ricocheted off the skate of a linesman right to Martin who walked down the slot and beat Eidsness with a low wrist shot.

North Dakota recovered quickly in the second period.  Frattin scored a shorthanded goal just 1:38 in, and Jake Marto beat Faulkner with a long wrist shot 5:12 later to tie the game.

UNO retook the lead when Brock Montpetit stole the puck deep in the North Dakota end and beat Eidsness with a wrist shot from in tight.

The Sioux responded on the power play when Mike Cichy poked the puck home during a netmouth scramble to make it 3-3.

But just 1:14 later, the Mavs had the lead again when #Terry Broadhurst# rammed home the rebound of a shot by Hudson.  It was his fifth goal of the year.

Faulkner stopped 27 shot and lost for just the second time this year.  Dell earned the win with nine saves on 10 shots in the third.
