ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The UNO hockey team remained undefeated in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association after skating to a 4-4 tie with St. Cloud State on Saturday night at the National Hockey Center.
The Mavericks are now 8-1-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the WCHA while the Huskies are 4-6-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the conference. The two teams will meet again in February.
UNO trailed the game, 3-2, entering the third period but Matt White tied the game before the period was five minutes old. Set free by a strong up-ice pass from Andrej Sustr, White wristed a long shot past St. Cloud goalie Mike Lee for his sixth goal of the year.
Then on a delayed penalty, Ryan Walters knocked home a feed from Brock Montpetit to give UNO its first lead of the game, 4-3.
But the Huskies would tie the game with just 1:04 remaining in regulation. Travis Novak jabbed the puck past #John Faulkner# off a feed from Aaron Marvin.
The two teams traded chances in overtime, and the Mavericks were forced to kill off a penalty to Walters in the last minute.
After being shutout 3-0 in Friday's opener, the Huskies ended their weekend scoring drought against the Mavericks on a three-on-two rush early in the game. Tony Mosey fed Jared Festler for a one-timer that sailed over the blocker hand of Faulkner at 3:25.
UNO tied the game a little more than five minutes later. Montpetit brought the puck down the right wing and dropped a pass to Zahn Raubenheimer who wired a shot past Lee for his fourth goal of the year.
St. Cloud State retook the lead when defenseman Taylor Johnson fired home a powerplay goal at 10:14.
The Huskies stretched that lead to 3-1 when Drew LeBlanc knocked the puck in off a netmouth scramble just 1:19 later.
But the Mavericks took advantage of a late power play to trim the lead to a goal. #Rich Purslow# fired the puck on goal. #Matt Ambroz# poked the puck past a sprawling Lee for this team-leading seventh goal of the year to make it 3-2 after two.
Faulkner stopped 16 shots in the game while Lee turned aside 32.
UNO returns home for its biggest series of the season to date when they host North Dakota on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 19 and 20.
