ST. CLOUD, Minn. – #John Faulkner# made 23 saves to backstop the UNO Mavericks to a 3-0 win over St. Cloud State on Friday night at the National Hockey Center. Ryan Walters scored a goal and earned an assist to lead the offense.
UNO is now 8-1-0 overall and 5-0-0 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The Mavericks are the league's only unbeaten team. St. Cloud State dips to 4-6-1 and 2-3-0 in the WCHA.
As they have in all but one road game this season, UNO got on the board first. Brock Montpetit stepped off the left-wing wall and fired a wrist shot that broke off goalie Mike Lee and into the net for his second goal of the season. Walters picked up the only assist.
UNO doubled its lead on a powerplay later in the stanza. #Terry Broadhurst jammed in the rebound of a shot by Matt White# for his fourth goal of the season.
The Mavericks were forced to kill off three penalties in the second period, but they were still able to build on their lead. Zahn Raubenheimer broke into the St. Cloud zone down the right wing and waited out a sliding defender before slipping a pass across to Walters who poked it by Lee at 10:53.
There was no scoring in the third as UNO clamped down on the Huskies.
The shutout was UNO's second of the season and of Faulkner's career. The win was also the first for the Mavericks against St. Cloud State. The Huskies had won the four previous meetings, all during the first two years of the UNO program.
The two teams complete the weekend series on Saturday night at 7:07 p.m.
