Mavericks Fall Short in Double Overtime, 2-1

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Missouri Western scored in double overtime to upset the UNO soccer team, 2-1 on Saturday night. It was the Griffons' first win of the season.

The loss drops the Mavericks to 5-5-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the MIAA.

Junior forward Hilary Horvatic opened up scoring for the Mavericks, blasting a shot past Missouri Western goalkeeper Jenna Weis off a rebound in the 2nd minute. 

Horvatic's goal was her team-leading fourth of the season.

Forward Heather Schmiemeier led the rally for the Griffons, scoring both the tying goal and the game winner.

Schmiemeier's first score came in the 70th minute on a rebound shot past UNO goalkeeper #Lauren Fox#.

With 8:24 remaining in the second overtime, Schmiemeier notched her second goal of the season on a cross shot from a corner kick, giving the Griffons the 2-1 victory.

Weis stopped 14 shots in more than 101 minutes of action.  The Mavericks outshot the Griffons 15-3

Missouri Western improves to 1-5-5 overall and 1-3-5 in the MIAA.

UNO returns to the UNO Soccer Field against Truman on Oct. 14 at 4 p.m. The Mavericks lost 1-0 in Kirksville, Mo. earlier this season.
