OMAHA, Neb. – #Matt Ambroz and Matt White# each scored two goals as the UNO hockey team ran away with its season opener, beating Clarkson University, 8-0, on the first day of the Mutual of Omaha Stampede.
UNO goalie #John Faulkner# picked up his first collegiate shutout in the process, stopping all 26 Clarkson shots. At the other end, the Mavericks fired 60 shots on goal, just six off the school record.
The goal total was the most for the Mavs since beating Niagara, 10-1 on Oct. 20, 2006.
The Mavericks got the lead just 66 seconds into the game when Zahn Raubenheimer tipped in a shot by Michael Young for his first collegiate goal. Young and Brock Montpetit earned their first collegiate assists on the play.
UNO doubled its lead on a power play later in the period. Ambroz tipped in a drive by #Eric Olimb# at 12:24 to give the Mavs a 2-0 lead after the first period.
The Mavs poured it on in the second period. #Terry Broadhurst# scored off a pass from Alex Hudson at 4:46, #Brent Gwidt# slipped a backhander under the crossbar off another Hudson feed at 13:59, and Johnnie Searfoss picked up his first collegiate goal at 16:48 to give UNO a 5-0 edge after two.
White sandwiched his first two collegiate goals around Ambroz's second tally of the night in the third period as the Mavs overwhelmed backup goalie Richie LaVeau. Starting goalie Paul Karpowich took the loss, surrendering five goals on 42 shots over the first two periods.
The Mavericks conclude the 2010 Stampede on Saturday night when they host RIT at 7:07 p.m. Clarkson and St. Cloud State play in the early game at 4:07 p.m.
