SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State got an overtime goal from Rick Schofield to beat the UNO hockey team 5-4 on Saturday night at Taffy Abel Arena. It was Schofield's second game-winning goal in as many nights as the Lakers swept a pair of games from the Mavericks. UNO is now 10-11-5 overall and 6-10-2-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
The Mavericks return to the friendly environs of the Qwest Center next weekend when they'll host Northern Michigan on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 22 and 23. Friday's game starts at 7:35 p.m. while Saturday's game faces off at 7:05 p.m.
Will Acton, who had two goals in the game, started the play with a shot from the left wing. UNO's #Jeremie Dupont# stopped the shot, but Schofield gathered the rebound and slipped the puck just inside the right post. Schofield scored the deciding goal in LSSU's 2-1 win on Friday.
UNO had forced overtime late in the third period when #Jeric Agosta tipped in a shot by Joey Martin# for his ninth goal of the year and second in as many games.
The Mavericks never led in the game, although they carried the play from the opening face-off. The Lakers would score on their first two shots, getting goals from Acton and Zac MacVoy shorthanded to build a 2-0 lead.
#Matt Ambroz# closed the gap with his seventh goal of the year off a face-off, but the Lakers restored the lead less than a minute later when Domenic Monardo scored off a long wrist shot. That chased UNO goalie #John Faulkner# who was replaced by Dupont.
The Mavericks got back to within a goal before the period closed when #John Kemp# forced a turnover, and #J.J. Koehler# beat goalie Brian Mahoney-Wilson with a wrist shot to make it 3-2 after one.
UNO tied the game early in the second period on a slick passing play. #Brent Gwidt# brought the puck across the line and dropped it for Martin. Martin drew the defense toward him and then tucked the puck back to #Brandon Richardson# who deked Mahoney-Wilson before sliding home a backhander to make it 3-3 after two.
Acton restored the Lakers' one-goal advantage when he beat Dupont with a wrist shot from just inside the blue line at 9:46 of the third period.
Dupont took the loss in relief with 20 saves. Mahoney-Wilson picked up his 12th win of the year with 40 saves as the Mavericks outshot the Lakers, 44-27. Lake Superior won three of the four games in the season series.
