SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The UNO hockey team lost to Lake Superior State 2-1 on Friday night at Taffy Abel Arena. In a game that felt like a playoff contest, the Mavericks surrendered the go-ahead goal with just 90 seconds remaining in regulation.
The play was controversial because the Lakers appeared to be offside as they entered the UNO zone. Will Acton fed Rick Schofield for a one-timer that beat UNO goalie #John Faulkner# over his right shoulder.
The Mavericks got a power play in the last 1:14 of the game when Lake Superior's John Scrymgeour was whistled for slashing, but they couldn't get the equalizer past goalie Brian Mahoney-Wilson, even with Faulkner pulled for an extra attacker.
The Mavericks withstood a strong start from the Lakers and eventually popped in the game's first goal. #Jeric Agosta knocked in the rebound of a point shot from Eric Olimb# at 9:37. #Terry Broadhurst# picked up the other assist. For Agosta, it was his eighth goal of the season, a new career high.
In the second period, Lake Superior State tied the game just as a power play came to an end. Zach Trotman's shot from the right point was tipped by Nick McParland just inside the left post. The game was tied 1-1 after 40 minutes.
The Mavericks are now 10-10-5 on the year and 6-9-2-1 in the CCHA. The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at 6:05 p.m.
