Mavericks Open MIAA Action With Win

OMAHA, Neb. - The University of Nebraska at Omaha soccer team (2-3, 1-0 MIAA) put together a dominant first half and opened Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play with a 4-2 win over Missouri Western (2-3, 0-1 MIAA) Thursday afternoon at UNO Soccer Field.

Sophomore forward Jerica Kuncl put the Mavericks up 1-0 at 11:39 in the first half, scoring on a penalty kick. It was her second penalty-kick goal of the season.

Redshirt freshman Nicole Baier had another big day offensively. She netted a pair of goals and added an assist. Baier's first goal came from a Hayley Renshaw pass in the 22nd minute. MWSU goalie Joyce Endicott attempted to stop the Renshaw pass and missed, giving Baier an empty net to shoot on.

Abby Widrig put the Griffons on the board at 33:44 to put the score at 2-1.

Baier quickly put the Mavs back up by two goals, scoring at 37:05 on a pass from Stephanie Sackett.

UNO out shot MWSU 11-4 in the first half.

After playing 24 minutes in net, junior Lauren Fox got in on the offensive side of the ball and scored her first career goal at 77:09 of the second half. Baier had the assist on the goal.

Heather Schmiemeier added a goal in the 77th minute for the Griffons.

Senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Odorisio picked up her second win of the season in net. She played the entire first half and allowed one goal. Fox and freshman Caitlin Stier split playing time in the second period.

The Mavs out shot the the Griffons 15-7 and had a 9-4 edge in corner kicks.

UNO will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 12 when they host Truman (2-1-2, 1-0 MIAA). Kickoff is slated for noon at UNO Soccer Field.
