OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Both teams went scoreless through eight innings until Nebraska-Omaha scored twice in the ninth to defeat Missouri Western, 2-0 in the MIAA postseason tournament semifinal Saturday afternoon. The Mavericks now advance to the championship game, Sunday at noon at Blue Valley Recreation Complex.
The Mavericks (43-13), who will play the Missouri Western/Emporia State winner, will have to be defeated twice Sunday to be eliminated. A win would give them the postseason title in their first year in the MIAA and it would give them an automatic berth into the NCAA South Central Region tournament.
Alli Hukill singled in
Lindsey Slocum to score the first run of the game and then
Kristin Wellwood drove in
Jenna Dell with another single. The Mavs could have plated more runs but
Molly Feichtinger was thrown out at home on a grounder to second base for the first out of the inning and the Mavs ended up leaving two runners on base when the inning ended.
Missouri Western went without a baserunner the final four innings.
Beth Haley entered the game for UNO in the third inning and pitched the final seven innings. She allowed no runs off two hits with three strikeouts and a walk. She earned the win and improved to 12-5.
Melissa Negrete, who started both games Friday, started Saturday's game and went two innings without giving up a hit before being pulled.
The Mavericks are now 6-3 in their ninth extra inning game.
