OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Fourth-seeded Nebraska-Omaha scored four runs in the first inning Friday night and held on for a 7-3 win against No. 1 seed Central Missouri in the second round of the MIAA postseason tournament at Blue Valley Recreation Complex.
The Mavericks (42-13) will now play Saturday at 3 p.m. in the semifinal against No. 2 seed Missouri Western. A win in that game would put them in the tournament final Sunday at noon and a loss would put them in the consolation final that would follow Saturday's game.
Lindsey Slocum, who hit two home runs in the first round game Friday, went 2 for 3 with two doubles in the second round.
Alli Hukill also had two hits and
Jenna Dell drove in two.
UNO got its four first-inning runs off three hits and two UCM errors.
Treightin Yates and Slocum had hits and they scored on an error and a fielder's choice, respectively. Two runs later scored on Hukill's single to right field.
The Jennies got two runs in the bottom of the first off two RBI hits and then UNO got them back in the second inning when
Ashley Lynch scored on a passed ball and Slocum doubled in a run.
Kelli Kurka hit a solo home run in the fourth to pull within three at 6-3 but the Mavs got one more in the seventh off a solo shot from Dell.
Melissa Negrete earned her second win of the day and went to 17-6 on the year. She pitched the first five innings and allowed three runs off four hits.
Beth Haley finished the game and earned her fourth save of the year. UCM was hitless against her in her two innings.
Kristal Holland started for the Jennies and went 1 1/3 innings. She allowed six runs off four hits before being pulled. Megan Leonard finished the game for UCM and allowed just two hits and the homer in the seventh.
