OMAHA, Neb. - The Mavericks completed a four-run comeback in the opener but couldn't do so in the night cap as they split with Emporia State Friday afternoon at Claussen-Westgate Field. No. 22 Nebraska-Omaha won the opener, 8-6 and then the Hornets took the second game, 4-2.
The Mavericks (25-6, 1-1 MIAA) will continue MIAA action Saturday at 1 p.m. against Washburn at home.
The Mavericks fell behind quickly in the first game when Miranda Campbell hit a two-run home run in the first inning and then the Hornets added two more in the third on one of five Maverick errors and a sacrifice fly.
UNO got its first two runs in the bottom of the third when
Katelyn Hinton hit a two-run shot and then the Mavs took the lead for good in the fourth with four runs off five hits.
Amanda Bader hit a solo homer,
Kristi Meneely hit an RBI double and then Hinton followed with an RBI triple.
Treightin Yates then made it back-to-back-to-back RBI hits with a single to left field.
Beth Haley started the game and allowed the six runs off seven hits through the first 5 1/3 innings.
Lindsey Slocum entered and closed out the game for her first save and Haley improved to 9-3.
Hinton was 3 for 3 in the game with four RBI and Bader and Yates each had two hits. Slocum allowed one hit in the final 1 2/3 innings.
In the second game it was the Hornets who came back to win. Wellwood had an RBI double in the second inning to put UNO up, 1-0 and then the Hornets tied the score in the third on a solo homer. They added one more in the sixth and one in the seventh.
The Mavericks scored one in the seventh when Yates went home on an error. They then had the tying runs on second and third with two outs but couldn't get any closer.
Melissa Negrete started for UNO and got the loss. She allowed three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Slocum pitched the final two innings and allowed a hit and a run.
