Kristin Wellwood's fourth-inning three-run home run in game two led to a 6-2 win in the night cap to help Nebraska-Omaha split a doubleheader with Missouri Western Friday at Claussen-Westgate Field.The Mavericks fell in the opener, 7-3 to the 25th-ranked Griffons.
The 19-th-ranked Mavericks went to 33-10 overall and 7-3 in the MIAA. They will wrap up the home portion of the schedule Sunday against Truman at 1 p.m. That date, originally schedule for Saturday before rain moved into the forecast, will be the final home games for senior
Amanda Bader and she will be honored between games in Senior Day.
The Mavs were down, 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth of game two.
Jenna Dell led off with a walk and
Alli Hukill later singled. On the next at-bat Wellwood knocked the ball over the right field fence for her first homer of the year and second of her three-year career.
UNO added runs in the fifth inning on an RBI double from Dell and in the sixth on a solo homer from Hukill to give UNO a four-run lead.
The Mavs opened up scoring in the first inning without getting a hit.
Treightin Yates reached on an error and later scored on an RBI groundout by
Amanda Bader. The Griffons added a run in the second and one in the fourth but the Maverick pitchers kept them from getting any more.
Lindsey Slocum started the game and got the win as she went five-plus innings and allowed two runs off seven hits. She gave up two hits in the sixth and
Beth Haley replaced her and finished the game to get her second save. Slocum improved to 11-1 on the year.
In game one the Griffons built a 6-0 lead before UNO broke through in the fifth. Slocum hit a solo homer and then Dell drove in two with a double but UNO got no closer.
Melissa Negrete (13-5) suffered the loss as she allowed six runs off eight hits and three walks.
Yates and Dell had a pair of hits in game one and Hukill and Wellwood had two each in the second game. Dell and Wellwood each drove in three runs on the day.
