KEARNEY, Neb. - The Mavericks scored late runs to give them extra cushion in a doubleheader sweep at Nebraska-Kearney Wednesday afternoon. No. 21 Nebraska-Omaha beat the Lopers, 7-4 in game one and 7-1 in game two to improve to 24-5 overall and stretch its winning streak to five straight.
Jenna Dell hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning of game two, giving the Mavericks some insurance as they entered the final frame with just a 3-1 lead.
Dell ended up 2 for 4 in that game and the Mavericks teed off for 16 hits.
Kristin Wellwood and
Treightin Yates had three each.
Melissa Negrete earned the win for UNO as she allowed eight hits and struck out two with a walk. She improved to 9-2 and won her eighth straight decision.
In the opener the Mavs went up 1-0 in the second inning when Dell singled and then
Ashley Lynch, who pinch ran for her, later scored on an error.
UNO then scored two runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to counter UNK's one run in the fourth. Yates and
Julia Krejci had back-to-back homers in the fifth and
Molly Feichtinger had a two-run single in the sixth.
Beth Haley earned the win with the complete game. She allowed four runs off six hits with five strikeouts and she improved to 8-3.
