UNO Looks to Extend its Six Game Win Streak in Flo

OMAHA, Neb. - The University of Nebraska at Omaha softball will travel to Orlando, Fla., for its final road tournament of the season.  The Mavericks will begin play on Wednesday, March 18 with a pair of games against Adelphi University and Southwest Minnesota State.  On Thursday, March 19, the Mavericks will take on former North Central Conference foe Minnesota Duluth and Southwest Minnesota State again.  The third day of the tournament will see UNO face Massachusetts-Lowell and New Haven.  Finally, the Mavs will wrap up the tournament on Saturday, March 21, against another former NCC rival  Augustana (S.D.), and Wayne State (Mich.).  The first two of games will begin at 1:00 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively. Games on the final two days take place at 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

The Records
The Mavericks improved their record to 14-3 on the season after beating Southwestern Oklahoma State for the 2nd time this season, Southwest Baptist, Tarleton State, Washburn and Augustana (S.D.) in the AAUW Softball Showdown.  UNO was led by freshman #Katelyn Hinton# who had six hits, including three home-runs and eight RBIs.  Once again all, of the Mavericks picthers nothced wins including three gems by #Melissa Negrete#.  Negrete pitched a total of 17 innings giving up seven hits, one earned run and struck out nine.

The Coaches
#Jeanne Scarpello# is in her tenth season as the UNO head coach.  She entered the 2009 season just three wins shy of reaching 400 wins for her career. She reached that milestone in just the fourth game of the season when the Mavs defeated Saint Edward's on February 21.  Her record now stands at 411-125-1 including four conference titles, nine straight trips to the NCAA Division II tournament, and a national championship in 2001.  She is assisted by Michala Cimino (12th season), #Cory Petermann# (9th season), and Steven Boulton (1st season).

Season Leaders

Katelyn Hinton moved into the team lead in several categories this week after a great weekend.  She now leads the team in batting average (.364), hits (20), runs (15), slugging percetange (.709), RBIs (18) and home-runs (5).  #Beth Haley# and Melissa Negrete are now tied for the team lead in wins with five apiece.  Haley continues to lead the team in strike-outs with 44.  Negrete is now the team leader in era with a 1.47 earned run average.

The Series
UNO has the edge in the all time series against all but one of it's foes this weeknd.  The Mavs lead the series against Adelphi 1-0, Southwest Minnesota State 11-2, Minnesoat Duluth 22-8, Massachusetts-Lowell 6-0, New Haven 3-2, and Wayne State (Mich.) 9-4.  The one opponent that the Mavs trail is Augustana (S.D.).  UNO currently sits three games back in the all-time series following a win over Augustana this past weekend bringing their record agianst the Vikings to 59-62-3.

Coming Up

UNO returns home for it's first home game of the season on March 25.  The Mavs will host Wayne State (Neb.) in a double-header at Claussen-Westgate Field at 2:00 p.m.  The Mavericks head right back on the road however to take on Pittsburg State at Pittsburg, Kan., in a double-header.  The first pitch will be thrown out at 1:00 p.m. on March 27.  The following day UNO will be in Joplin, Mo., for another double-header this time against Missouri Southern.  The first game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
