SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The 2008-09 season came to an end Saturday night for the University of Nebraska at Omaha hockey team. The second-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish completed the second-round Central Collegiate Hockey Association series sweep of the Mavericks with a 1-0 shut out at the Joyce Center in South Bend, Ind.
Senior goalie #
Jerad Kaufmann# rebounded after Friday's shaky outing, stopping 22 of the 23 shots he faced on the night en route to earning the game's third star honor. But Kaufmann's effort wasn't enough as Notre Dame picked up its third straight clean-slate victory over UNO this year.
Saturday's game started much the same as Friday's with Notre Dame jumping out to an early lead just minutes into the opening frame. Justin White slammed home the go ahead marked at the 2:36 mark of the first, beating a diving Kaufmann to put the Irish on top 1-0 heading into the first intermission.
The second period mirrored the same frame from a night ago as well. Both teams saw their share of scoring chances but were unable to cash in and skated into the second break with Notre Dame holding on to its one-goal lead.
Needing the win to keep their season alive, the Mavericks threw everything they had at the Irish in the third, outshooting Notre Dame 13-4 in the final frame. UNO didn't have an answer for Notre Dame goaltender Jordan Pearce. The Irish goalie made 30 saves to collect his third consecutive shutout over UNO this season with the 1-0 final.
The Mavericks started the 2008-09 season on fire, jumping out to the best start in program history at 12-4-3 after a Dec. 29 win at Yale. But the team cooled after the new year, finishing the campaign at 15-17-8 overall. The team finished in eighth place in the CCHA and advanced to the second round of the conference playoffs for the fifth consecutive season.
