SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The second-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish downed the University of Nebraska at Omaha Mavericks 5-0 in game one of their best-of-three Central Collegiate Hockey Association second-round playoff match up Friday night at the Joyce Center on the campus of Notre Dame.
UNO, now 15-16-8 on the year, trails Notre Dame (28-5-3) one game to none in their best-of-three series, and face a must win situation in Saturday night's game which is set for a 6:05 p.m. CST face-off
Notre Dame put the Mavericks in an early hole, as Calle Ridderwall made the most of a UNO turnover in its own end, scoring at 2:01 of the opening frame to give the Irish a 1-0 lead. Notre Dame didn't stop there, extending its lead with goals by Ben Ryan, Billy Mayday and Ryan Thang before the intermission to take a 4-0 lead.
The Mavericks settled in during the second period, applying steady pressure in the Notre Dame zone and outshooting the Irish 12-8 in the stanza. Junior goalie #
Jeremie Dupont# came on in relief in the second and helped the Mavs to remain within striking distance of the Irish after two, making a pair of key saves on Notre Dame odd-man rushes to keep the score 4-0.
The Mavericks outshot the Irish in the third period as well, but were unable to come up with an answer for Notre Dame goaltender Jordan Pearce and were held off the scoreboard 5-0.
