Weekly Release
The University of Nebraska at Omaha softball was originally scheduled to play its first home games of the season on Tuesday, March 10 in a double-header against Augustana (S.D.). However due to incliment weather, those games have been postponed. UNO will hit the road again for its second to last tournament road trip of the season this weekend. The Mavs are heading to Emporia, Kan., for the AAUW Softball Showdown. UNO will have a total of five games over the weekend, starting with Southwestern Oklahoma State and Southwest Baptist on Friday beginning at 12:00 p.m. On Saturday they will take on Tarleton State at 1:30 p.m., and Washburn at 4:00 p.m. The Mavericks will wrap up the weekend on Sunday against Augustana (S.D.) at 10:00 a.m.
The Records
The Mavericks improved their record to 9-3 on the season after beating Northwest Missouri State, Drury, Oklahoma City and Fort Hays State in the Teri (Mathis) Zenner Memorial Tournament. Their one loss of the weekedn came against Cameron.
Lindsey Slocum helped propel the Mavs this weekend going 9-13 at the plate driving in five runs and belting two home-runs over the weeked. Each of the Mavs starting pitchers notched a win including two from Slocum.
The Coaches
Jeanne Scarpello is in her tenth season as the UNO head coach. She entered the 2009 season just three wins shy of reaching 400 wins for her career. She reached that milestone in just the fourth game of the season when the Mavs defeated Saint Edward's on February 21. Her record now stands at 406-125-1 including four conference titles, nine straight trips to the NCAA Division II tournament, and a national championship in 2001. She is assisted by Michala Cimino (12th season),
Cory Petermann (9th season), and Steven Boulton (1st season).
Season Leaders
Katelyn Hinton leads the team in batting average (.368) and hits (14). Hinton is tied for the team lead in runs (9) with
Lindsey Slocum, and the RBI lead ( 10) with
Kristin Wellwood. Hinton, Slocum and Wellwood are all tied for the team lead in home-runs with two each.
Beth Haley leads the team in wins with four and strike-outs with 41. Slocum is the team leader in era with a miniscule 1.24 earned run average.
The Series
The Mavs lead the series against its first opponent of the weekend, Southwestern Oklahoma State, 3-0. UNO will look to remain undefeated against Southwest Baptist University in the seventh meeting between the schools, and versus Tarleton State in the second meeting between the two. The Mavericks will look to extend its lead in the series with Washburn to 14 games as they currently lead the series 21-8. UNO will look to close the gap in the series with long-time rival Augustana (S.D.) as it trails in the series 58-62-3.
Coming Up
UNO will head to Orlando, Fla., for the Rebel Spring Games tournament. The Mavericks are scheduled to play a total of eight games beginning on March 18 at 1:00 p.m. against Adelphi and then Southwest Minnesota State at 3:00 p.m. On the 19th, the Mavs will face Minnesota Duluth and Southwest Minnesota State at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. respectively. Massachusetts-Lowell and New Haven will be the Mavs opponents on the March 20, followed by Augustana (S.D.) and Wayne State on March 21 to wrap up the tournament. The March 20 and 21 games start at 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
