OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO hockey team's struggle to score goals reached new heights in a 5-0 loss to the Western Michigan Broncos on Saturday night at Qwest Center Omaha.  It was their third shutout loss of the season, extending their winless streak to nine games (0-5-4).

The Mavericks have scored just nine goals during the streak.

UNO carried the play in the first period, outshooting the Broncos 19-6, but the game remained scoreless at the intermission.

Western Michigan broke the ice early in the second period.  Patrick Galivan and Greg Squires worked a perfect give-and-go that Galivan finished for his ninth goal of the year.

The Broncos doubled their lead less than a minute later when Galivan returned the favor, setting up Squires for a sharp-angle shot that beat goalie Jerrad Kaufmann to make it 2-0 after two.

Western Michigan put the game out of reach with three goals in the first half of the third period.  Kevin Connauton, Derek Roehl and Max Campbell scored in a span of 5:20 to put a stranglehold on the lead.

Riley Gill made 46 saves in goal to earn the shutout for the Broncos.

UNO dropped to 13-11-7 on the year and 8-9-7-3 in the CCHA.  They return to action next Friday and Saturday, Feb. 13 and 14 when they visit the Michigan Wolverines.

The Mavericks wrapped up their Leap For A Cure campaign Saturday night bringing in a total of $34,653.93 for the Estabrook Cancer Center here in Omaha to help fund research and education. The specially designed game sweaters the Mavs wore this weekend were also auctioned off following Saturday's contest and brought in an addition $8,600 for the cause.
