Mavericks Back in Action at the MSSU/PSU Border Ba

The University of Nebraska at Omaha softball team heads back on the road this weekend to compete in the Missouri Southern/Pittsburg State Crossover Invite being held in Pittsburg, Kan and Joplin, Mo. The Mavericks will open the weekend facing Oklahoma Panhandle State on Friday Feb. 27, at 3 p.m. On Saturday the Mavs will face Washburn at 9 a.m. and Drury University at 1 p.m. UNO will finish up the tournament on Sunday by facing Lincoln University at 11 a.m. and finally Rockhurst University at 1 p.m.

The Records
The Mavericks started out the 2009 season winning four of their first six games at the South Central Shootout. Beth Haley and Kelly Hinton were both named to the All-tournament team following their performances. Haley went 2-0 and struck out 17 batters. She had an ERA of 0.98 allowing just one run in 14 1/3 innings. Hinton batted .444 with two home runs, six RBIs and eight hits, all of which were team highs.

The Coaches
Jeanne Scarpello is in her tenth season as the UNO head coach. She entered the 2009 season just three wins shy of reaching 400 wins for her career. She reached that milestone in just the fourth game of the season when the Mavs defeated Saint Edward's on February 21. Her record now stands at 401-124-1 including four conference titles, nine straight trips to the NCAA Division II tournament, and a national championship in 2001. She is assisted by Michala Cimino (12th season), Cory Petermann (9th season), and Steven Boulton (1st season).

The Series

The Mavs are 2-1 against their first opponent Oklahoma Panhandle State. Next up UNO will face Washburn for the 30th time in school history. The series record is 21-8 in favor of the Mavericks. Following that they will take on Drury for just the second time. The Mavs won the first meeting 13-3. On Sunday the Mavs will try to remain undeafeted against Lincoln in the second meeting between the schools. They will meet Rockhurst for the first time in the final game on Sunday.

Pre-Season Poll
The Mavericks were picked to finish first in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association according to a pre-season poll of the league's coaches. UNO received 94 points and four first place votes in the voting, tying Emporia State which also received 94 points and had five first place votes.

Coming Up
The Mavericks will be in Joplin, Mo, next weekend for a set of five games at the Missouri Southern tournament. The Mavs will play three games on March 6 squaring off against Northwest Missouri State at 9 a.m., Drury University at 11 a.m. and Oklahoma City at 3 p.m. On March 7, UNO will face Cameron University at 9 a.m. and finish up against Fort Hays State at 1 p.m. On March 10 the Mavericks return home for their first home game of the season as they host Augustana (S.D.) in a double header starting at 2 p.m.
