OMAHA, Neb. – The second-ranked University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish came away with a 1-0 win over the University of Nebraska at Omaha Saturday night in front of 7,991 at the Omaha Civic Auditorium.
The Irish improve to 25-5-3 and 19-4-3-3 in the CCHA, while the Mavericks drop their fifth straight game and fall to 13-15-7 and 8-12-7-3 in CCHA action.
After skating to two scoreless periods, UND scored the lone goal of the game in the final stanza on a two-on-one break. Dan Kissel took a pass from Erik Condra and beat a sprawling #
Jerad Kaufmann# with 13:29 remaining in the game.
It appeared UNO was able to tie the game at 1-1 on a scrum in front of Irish goaltender Jordan Pearce, but the Mavericks' #
John Kemp# was called for a cross-checking penalty with just three minutes left and the score remained 1-0.
The Mavericks had several opportunities to light the lamp in the second period with three breakaways, but each time they were unable to get a clean shot on Pearce.
Kaufmann collected 23 saves on the evening, while Pearce stopped all 17 UNO shots and picked up his fifth shutout of the year for UND.
The Fighting Irish out-shot UNO by a 24-7 margin, including an 8-2 edge in the third period.
UNO will look to stop its current 13-game winless streak Tuesday when they welcome Minnesota State, Mankato to Omaha. Face off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Qwest Center Omaha. MSU topped UNO 4-3 earlier this year in Mankato, Minn.
