BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The UNO hockey team held the CCHA's top scoring team to just two goals but could not get a goal of its own, losing to Ferris State 2-0 on Friday night at Ewigleben Ice Arena. Ferris State goalie Taylor Nelson made 28 saves to earn the shutout.
UNO drops to 7-5-3 on the season and 4-5-2-1 in the CCHA. The Bulldogs improve to 10-3-2 and 5-2-2-2 in the league. The two teams will square off again on Saturday afternoon. Face off is 4:05 p.m. CT.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring while killing UNO's first power play of the game. Matthew Kirzinger picked up a loose puck, swept in down the left wing and fired a wrist shot past #John Faulkner# to put Ferris State up 1-0 after one.
Ferris State outshot the Mavericks in the second period, as they did in the first, but each team had good opportunities. UNO's best came when #Brandon Richardson# beat Nelson with a hard wrist shot. It trickled toward the net, but Nelson reached back and gloved the puck as it reached the goal line. After a video review, it was ruled no goal.
UNO continued to generate chances in the third period but couldn't get anything by Nelson. Blair Riley iced the game with an empty-net goal at 19:28.
Faulkner finished the game with 34 saves.
