MANKATO, Minn. – The UNO hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie with non-conference rival Minnesota State on Friday night at Verizon Wireless Center. The game was the front end of a home and home series between the two schools that share the nickname, Mavericks. They'll finish the series on Saturday night at Qwest Center Omaha. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
Minnesota State earned the early lead when Justin Jokinen's sharp angle shot from the left wing beat a screened #John Faulkner# at 8:40 of the first period.
UNO tied the game on a powerplay late in the first. #Matt Ambroz crashed the net and knocked in the rebound of a shot by Terry Broadhurst# for his fifth goal of the year. It was also his team-leading fourth powerplay goal.
UNO had the last best chance to break the deadlock with a powerplay in overtime but could not convert.
Faulkner was the busier of the goalies, making 29 saves to improve to 6-5-3. Freshman Phil Cook of Minnesota State stopped 25 at the other end.
