FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The UNO hockey team fell just short of a three-goal comeback, losing to the University of Alaska, 4-3, on Friday night at the Carlson Center.   The Nanooks erupted for three goals in less than two minutes of the first period and held on to win the first game of the two-game series.

The Mavericks are now 7-7-3 overall and 4-7-2-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association while the Nanooks improve to 9-4-4 and 6-4-3-3 in the league standings.  The two teams finish the weekend series on Saturday night at 10:05 p.m. CT.

Trailing 4-1 midway through the second period, the Mavericks battled back, scoring two goals in 1:55.  First, #Nick Fanto knocked in the rebound of a shot by Mark Bernier# while on the power play at 9:17.  It was Fanto's second goal in as many games.

At 11:12, #Brent Gwidt# scored his second goal of the year, tipping in a pass from #Terry Broadhurst# to make it 4-3.  #Nick Von Bokern# picked up assists on both goals.

But the Mavericks could not get the equalizer in spite of outshooting the Nanooks 24-12 over the final two periods including a 17-8 margin in the second period.

UNO got off to a quick start, scoring just 17 seconds into the game when #Jeric Agosta tipped in a blast by Eddie DelGrosso# from the left point.

From that point, the Mavericks were whistled for five straight penalties, and Alaska sandwiched power play goals by Dustin Sather and Jarrett Granberg around an even-strength marker by Ron Meyers in a span of 1:40 to take a 3-1 lead after one. 

Chad Gehon got the eventual game-winner when he scored off a scramble in front of the UNO net at 12:26 of the second period.

#Jeremie Dupont# made 29 saves in the loss and is now 2-2-1 on the year.  Scott Greenham picked up the win for Alaska with 31 saves.
