OMAHA, Neb. - The Mavericks trailed by just seven at halftime but started slow in the second half in an 80-57 exhibition loss at Creighton Thursday evening.
The Mavericks will open the regular season November 15 at home against Dana in a 1:30 p.m. contest.
Freshman forward #
Heather Pohl led all players with 21 points. She was seven of 10 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers and she hit five of six free throws. Senior guard Alyssa Green# had 11 points.
The Mavericks shot 43 percent from the field while the Jays were just 40 percent. CU countered with an 8-2 advantage on 3-pointers and 20-9 advantage on made free throws.
The Bluejays led, 38-31 at halftime and scored the first 16 points of the first half to build a 21-point lead with 14:43 remaining. The Mavericks turned the ball over seven times during that scoreless stretch.
The Bluejays built it to a game-high 27 at 10:33 and then again at 7:06 with the score, 71-44. The Mavericks then went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 19 but just 2:34 remained in the contest.
The Mavericks led twice early in the first half. Pohl scored the game's first points with a basket at 19:10 and then Mavericks led again at 6-5. The Bluejays then built a 16-8 lead before a 7-0 run by UNO cut CU's lead to one at 16-15.
The Jays built their first-half lead to seven twice after that and then eight with 21 seconds left when Sam Schuett hit a pair of free throws. Pohl hit a 3-pointer with nine seconds remaining to cut the lead to four and then Chevelle Herrring drove up the court in the final seconds for a lay-up that made the score 38-31 at halftime.
Pohl led all players with 14 points in the first half. She was 4 for 6 from the field and 5 of 6 from the free throw line.
Freshman guards #
Jamie Nash and Paige Frauendorfer# led the team with three assists each. Frauendorfer tied Pohl with a team-high six rebounds. Nash and Green had three steals each.
Kelsey Woodard led Creighton with 17 points and a total of five Jays scored in double figures.
