MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan Wildcats spotted the UNO hockey team the first goal of the game but roared back for a 5-1 win on Friday night at the Berry Events Center.  The Mavericks are now 5-3-3 on the season and 2-3-2-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Assocation.

The two teams will face off again on Saturday night at 7:35 p.m.

The Mavericks struck quickly in the first thanks to a powerplay.  #Nick Fanto found John Kemp# alone in the slot, and he beat goalie Brian Stewart with a backhander for his second goal of the year.

Northern Michigan responded later in the period.  Off a strong forecheck, Mark Olver forced a turnover and dumped the puck to Justin Florek who snapped home a quick shot at 11:33.

The Wildcats started the second period with powerplay time left over from the first period and cashed in when Florek tipped in a shot from Greger Hanson at 42 seconds.

Later with the teams skating four-on-four, Olver held off a UNO defender and slipped a backhander past goalie #John Faulkner# for his team-leading seventh goal of the year.

The Wildcats got goals from Hanson and Chad Pietila, his first collegiate goal, to conclude the scoring in the third period.

The Mavericks have now lost back-to-back games for the first time this season.
