OMAHA, Neb. – Lake Superior State rode a strong start to a 3-1 win over the UNO hockey team on Saturday night at Qwest Center Omaha. #
Terry Broadhurst# scored UNO's only goal during a frantic third period as the Mavericks tried to pull off a comeback.
UNO is now 5-2-3 on the year and 2-2-2-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
Broadhurst scored his goal early in the third, stepping off the right wing wall and snapping a hard wrist shot past Lakers' goalie Brian Mahoney-Wilson. It was his third goal of the year.
The Mavericks rang two posts shortly thereafter, one off a hard shot from #
Eddie DelGrosso#. They also had a later powerplay during which they pulled goalie #
Jeremie Dupont# for an extra attacker but could not beat Mahoney-Wilson again.
The Lakers had a quick start, scoring just 59 seconds into the game. Rick Schofield slipped through the UNO defense and threw a backhander past Dupont for Lake Superior State's first goal of the weekend.
The visitors doubled their lead with less than five minutes gone in the period. Will Acton took a pass from Schofield and roofed a shot over Dupont to make it 2-0 after one.
UNO had to kill 4:30 of a five-minute major when #
Alex Hudson# was ejected for checking from behind at 8:51 of the second period. They did so but couldn't stop an even-strength goal by Domenic Monardo in the final minute of the stanza. He finished off an odd-man rush, stuffing home a feed from Brad Cooper for his second goal of the season. The Mavericks trailed 3-0 after two.
The Mavericks return to action on Nov. 20 and 21 when they travel to Marquette, Mich. to face Northern Michigan University. Game time is 6:35 p.m. CT each night.
