OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO hockey team scored three third-period goals to hold off a determined Army team and win 6-4 in the first game of the Mutual of Omaha Icebreaker. Freshman #Terry Broadhurst# scored the game-winning goal to push the Mavericks into the final against UMass-Lowell on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
The Mavericks open the season with a win for the second year in a row and will face a Lowell team ranked tenth in the preseason.
UNO trailed 4-3 entering the third period after Army scored three times in the second. Andy Starczewski's powerplay tally at 10:53 gave the Black Knights their first lead of the game. The two teams had traded goals since #Jeric Agosta# opened the scoring at 3:03 of the first, taking advantage of a broken stick by defenseman Army John Clark to net his first of the year.
#JJ Koehler tied the game at 4-4 early in the third period when he tipped in a shot by Kyle Ensign# at 2:01.
The Mavericks were clearly energized by the goal and kept pushing the pace. Broadhurst made a great second effort on his goal, following the rebound of his first shot and throwing a backhander past Army goalie Jay Clark. The goal was the first of Broadhurst's college career.
#Nick Fanto# added an empty net goal in the last ten seconds for the final score.
#John Kemp# notched a powerplay goal for the Mavericks in the first. #Rich Purslow# had the Mavs' only tally in the second to round out the scoring.
Cody Omilusik has a pair of goals for Army.
#John Faulkner earned the win in relief of Jeremie Dupont#. He made seven saves and allowed just one goal in just over 31 minutes of work.
