OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Nebraska at Omaha hockey team picked up two conference points Friday night, winning a six-round shootout 3-2 over the tenth-ranked Miami RedHawks after skating to a 2-2 tie in regulation of their Central Collegiate Hockey Association series at the Qwest Center Omaha.
Sophomore #Eric Olimb# scored the equalizer with just 1:12 seconds remaining in the third period to send the game into overtime while junior goalie #Jeremie Dupont# remains perfect on the season in shootouts, 3-0, denying four of six RedHawk shooters in the overtime tiebreaker.
Officially a tie, the Mavericks are now 13-8-5 overall and 8-6-5-3 in CCHA play. Miami's record moved to 13-8-4 and 11-5-3-1 in conference action. The two teams will wrap up their two-game CCHA series Saturday night at the Qwest Center Omaha. Face-off for the second contest is set for 7:05 p.m. CST and will be televised on NET and CBS College Sports Network.
Miami got on the things going in the first converting on the power play at 13:37 to take a 1-0 lead on a Jarod Palmer goal.
The RedHawks and UNO battled to a stalemate in the second. Each team had eight shots on goal but neither found the net.
Miami extended their lead at the 9:46 mark of the third on a goal by Andy Miele and with just more then ten minutes remaining looked as though they had put the game out of reach.
But the Mavericks came storming back late in the period, outshooting the RedHawks 15-10 in the final stanza and driving home a pair of goals in the final 7:52 of the game to send the contest into overtime.
#Tomas Klempa#'s team-leading 12th goal of the season cut the RedHawk lead in half, 2-1, while Olimb's goal at 18:42 knotted things up.
No one on either team had an answer for the opposing goalie in overtime. Dupont stopped both shots he saw in the extra frame while Miami's Connor Knapp denied the only one he faced.
For the second time this season sophomore #Rich Purslow# netted the winner in the sixth round of a CCHA shootout, accomplishing the task the first time back on Dec. 5 against Alaska.
