FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The 20-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha Mavericks skated to a 1-1 tie with the University of Alaska Nanooks in Central Collegiate Hockey Association action Saturday at the Carlson Center, but were unable to grab an extra point, losing the shootout 1-0.

UNO's Dan Charleston provided the offense for the Mavs, scoring the team's lone goal midway through the second frame while senior goalie Jerad Kaufmann turned away 21 Nanook shots in the tie.

The Mavs (13-8-4, 8-6-4-2) picked up a single point for the tie and moved into a tie for fourth place with the Ohio State Buckeyes. UAF (11-8-5, 9-7-4-3), however, picked up two points and remains in a tie for second in the CCHA with Miami.

Alaska cashed in on its first power-play opportunity of the night early in the first period, grabbing a quick 1-0 lead, for the second night in-a-row, on a Ryan Hohl goal at the 5:43 mark of the frame.

The Mavericks fought back and tied things up at 1-1 on a Dan Charleston even-strength score 8:14 into the second, beating UAF goalie Chad Johnson with a slap shot from middle of the circle. Matt Ambroz and Nick Von Bokern each picked up assists on the goal.

Neither team could break the deadlock in the third period or five-minute overtime, as both goaltenders made a number of big saves to keep their respective team in the game and send things to a shootout.

Nanook's goalie Chad Johnson denied all three Maverick shooters in the shootout while Ryan Hohl, UAF's second shooter, was able to sneak one past Kaufmann and pick up the extra point for the Nanooks.

UNO will return home next weekend to host the ninth-ranked Miami University RedHawks at the Qwest Center Omaha on Jan. 23-24. Face-off for each contest is set for 7:05 p.m. CST, and can be seen via television on NET.
