OMAHA, Neb. - The Northern Michigan Wildcats rode a 3-goal second period to a 3-2 win over the UNO hockey team on Saturday night at Qwest Center Omaha. The loss gave the Mavericks a split of the two-game series. UNO won 4-3 on Friday night. The Mavericks are now 13-7-3 on the season and 8-5-3-2 in the CCHA.

Tomas Klempa pounced on the rebound of a shot by Mike Phillippi# and tossed it into an empty net during a first period powerplay. The goal, his 10th of the year, gave UNO a 1-0 lead after one period.
The Wildcats tied the game early in the second when Andrew Cherniwchan found Andrew Fernandez pinching in from the left point. Fernandez one-time the puck past UNO goalie #
Jerad Kaufmann# to make it 1-1.
Northern Michigan took its first lead of the weekend on a powerplay later in the period when Jared Brown knocked home his third goal of the year.
Just 3:26 later, Mark Olver wristed one in for his eighth goal of the season to make it 3-1.
The Mavericks had life late in the third period when Klempa scored his second goal of the night on the powerplay at 15:14. With Kaufmann pulled in the final minute for an extra attacker, UNO could not get another good chance.
Kaufmann was the busier of the two goalies with 25 saves. Northern's Brian Stewart had 21. Phillippi had two assists and finished the weekend with three helpers in his first two games of the year. Olver had a goal and an assist.
The Mavericks face their most grueling road trip of the season next weekend when they travel to Fairbanks, Alaska to take on the University of Alaska on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 16 and 17. Both games start at 10 p.m. CST.
