Duluth, Minn. -- The University of Nebraska at Omaha softball team claimed the final North Central Conference title Sunday, after outlasting Minnesota Duluth, 5-2, in nine innings and shutting out Minnesota State, 5-0, in the championship game.
UNO (42-11) will travel to Emporia, Kan. for the North Central Regional Tournament Wednesday, May 7th – Sunday, May 11th. The name of the Mavs' opponent will be released on Monday.
In the first game,
Brianna Cataudella led the offensive attack with a single, a home run, and two RBIs. Her sixth inning homer kept the Mavs alive, sending the game to extra innings.
A three-run ninth inning, highlighted by
Julia Krejci's single that plated two, gave UNO the victory.
Beth Haley allowed only two runs in nine complete innings, striking out six.
In the championship game,
Treightin Yates' lead-off triple started a five-hit, three-run rally in the fifth. In the final inning,
Leslie Svoboda added all the insurance UNO would need when her 16th double of the year scored two.
Melissa Negrete went the distance for UNO, allowing only three hits and striking out four.
