Platisha Lifts Mavs Past Nanooks in 3OT

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Nebraska at Omaha needed every minute of regulation, and then some, edging the University of Alaska, 2-1, in a triple-overtime contest to advance through the first round of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs Sunday night at the Qwest Center Omaha.

At 104:22, the game was the longest contest in UNO history, and the ninth longest in NCAA history. Just this past Friday, the eighth longest game was recorded after Yale and Rensselaer skated for 105:40 before Yale's Broc Little gave the team a 3-2 win in the first round of the ECAC playoffs.

Junior forward J.P. Platisha scored his first goal of the season, and his first since Nov. 26 2005, 4:22 into the third overtime to lift the Mavericks past the Nanooks and into the second round of the CCHA playoffs where they will meet the top-seeded Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor, Mich. next weekend, Mar. 14-16, for a best-of-three series.

Things got off to an ominous start as UAF grabbed the 1-0 lead 11:06 into the opening frame on a Trevor Hyatt shorthanded goal.

But the Mavs fought their way back into the game, scoring a power-play goal at 14:19 of the second period to even things at 1-1. Freshman forward Matt Ambroz deflected a Joey Martin wrist shot past Nanooks' goalie Wylie Rogers. Junior Tomas Klempa picked up the second assist on the tying goal. The power-play marker was number 51 on the year for the Mavericks, setting a new single season record by bettering last season's total of 50.

Both teams had their chances in the third. The Mavs peppered Rogers with 14 shots in the final frame, only to come up empty. Jerad Kaufmann was equally impressive for the Mavericks, turning away a final UAF power-play in the closing minutes of the period to send the game into overtime.

The Mavericks kept the pressure on the Nanooks in overtime, tallying 12 shots in the first overtime and 16 in the second extra frame, but Rogers was up to the challenge, and kept the game deadlocked at 1-1.
After a couple of tense moments in the beginning of the third overtime, UNO finally gave the few remaining fans something to celebrate. Platisha picked up a rebound off a Klempa shot right in front of the Nanooks' net and chipped the puck over Rogers' left shoulder 4:22 into the third overtime to lift the UNO past UAF, 2-1. Junior forward Dan Charleston was credited with the second helper.

Kaufmann earned the game's second star honors for his performance, recording a career-high 51 saves on the evening. As a team UNO set a school record for shots in a games with 66.
