Box Score OMAHA, Neb. -- A record crowd of 10,598 was on hand to watch as UNO snapped its five-game home winless streak, defeating Central Collegiate Hockey Association clustermate Ohio State, 5-2, Saturday night at the Qwest Center Omaha.
The record crowd got into the swing of things early as UNO was celebrating its senior night, honoring five Mavericks before the game.
Mick Lawrence,
Brandon Scero,
Bill Bagron,
Eric Aarnio and team captain
Bryan Marshall all saluted the fans before their final regular season home game at the Qwest.
Scero didn't keep the fans waiting long, he put the Mavs up 1-0 just 5:25 into the first period on a power-play goal. Lawrence got an assist on the score as did sophomore Eddie Del Grosso.
The Buckeyes were able to tie the game 1-1 before the first intermission on a John Albert tally.
Following a scoreless second frame UNO netted a barrage of goals in the third to pull away from OSU. After his 15-game point streak ended Friday, Marshall was able to get going again, scoring a power-play goal at 2:27 of the third to put the Mavs back out front, 2-1. Scero and junior
Dan Charleston were credited with the assists.
OSU was able to draw even at 7:05 when Johann Kroll beat Junior
Jerad Kaufmann with a slapshot from the blueline.
Just 62 seconds later the Mavs cashed in on a power-play opportunity when Del Grosso snapped a shot from the point past OSU goalkeeper, Joseph Palmer, putting the Mavs back on top for good. Lawrence and Charleston each picked up their second assist of the game on the goal.
Sophomore
Jeric Agosta added an insurance marker for the Mavs at 18:08 on an even-strength rush to extend the lead to 4-2. Charleston netted his third helper of the night and junior
Tomas Klempa picked up the second assist.
Lawrence put the exclamation point on the Maverick victory with an empty-net, power-play goal with only 30 seconds left in regulation. Junior
Juha Uotila picked one of the assists and Marshall got the second helper to push his NCAA leading assist total to 30.
The win lifts UNO to fifth place in the CCHA standings with an overall record of 13-13-4 and a conference record of 10-10-4. UNO will move to the Civic Auditorium next weekend, Feb. 15-16, to take on Bowling Green, both contests are slated for a 7:05 p.m. start.
